How do I get a book published at my age?

Get Rid of Writer's Procrastination and Put Your Words to Work For You Now with: Writer's success. This is 100% No Risk to You

Im 13 years old. I love to write and I’ve really been into it for quite some time. Im really getting allot of potential, and allot of emails from fans of my poetry that I could make a great writer. Im looking for a way I can get Into the process of writing a book. I already have tons of poems written in a notebook that i can edit to make fit for a book. All im concerned about is how to get a publisher and all the crazy stuff. You got any advice for me?

Thanks in advanced

Before any legitimate publisher will be interested in a book of your poems, you have to establish a track record by publishing a lot of individual poems in print and online journals. To find useful information about journals that publish poetry, read the book "Poet’s Market" (your local library might have a copy), and look at this website:

Remember that all successful published poets have read hundreds of poems by other poets for every one that they have written themselves. So as you keep up your writing, be sure to educate yourself by reading a lot of good poetry.

what are good colleges that have good writing programs?

I’m interested in maybe having a job writing for a news paper or magazine. I want to go to a college that would help me prepare for this. I really like Boston and New York so a college there would be great, but colleges elsewhere are good too. Thanks

A school that is very good for English may be different from a school that is very good in Journalism. It sounds like you want to go into the latter (since you said you want to write for papers/magazines), so I would recommend these, which are the top schools for undergraduate journalism:
Northwestern (Medill)
U Maryland (Merrill)
Syracuse (Newhouse)
Boston University
U Missouri
Indiana U Bloomington

You should also consider:
USC
UCLA
NYU
Columbia (no undergrad j-program, but strong newspaper and lots of opportunities for experience due to location)

Is writing a book difficult to publish?

This would be the first time I have actually written a book, although I’m a beginner at writing books and am not an "expert", you might say, I have spent the past 7-8 years designing every character to possible perfection both physically and personality development, environment, and how they react. I’ve always been an artist that can draw these exotic adventures, but my biggest problem was how should I publish it since both of these stories I consider more directed to children, my other book is alot more of any age. I am aware of copyright as well, I am just trying together as much information as possible on how to publish as possible. I was able to present my plot storyline as a sample, and it was praised, I feel like I put alot of my heart into these characters and I wanted to ask much better writers for advice, I appreciate it

What you need to do is get down to your local library and work your way through The Writer’s Market.

There are legitimate publishers who will look at submissions from unagented authors, but many won’t. I suggest that you prepare a query letter and submission packet, then send it to publishers and agents who are accepting submissions. Pay attention to each company’s submission rules! Breaking those rules for a first-time author sends an unprofessional message.

Do not self-publish. It’s not worth the trouble. Do not get scammed by a vanity or subsidy publisher. You NEVER pay a publisher. Never. The money ALWAYS flows to the author.

You have a lot of research ahead of you and a lot of competition out there. Good luck. You might also check places like Absolute Write for their children’s book forums. They always have a lot of current industry information.

how do i go about gettinfg my book published, and how do i go get reconized and who do i get recognized by.?

one of my goals r to complete a book before i graduate high school and i have already started. i would like to know how do i go about this.

First of all you don’t need to get an editor ahead of time. Publisher’s have editors that work for them. Secondly, I would not recommend getting a literary agent. Why pay someone to do something that you could do yourself? I’m fourteen and my book was published when I was twelve. I didn’t use an agent. If I can do it so can you. Here is how I would go about getting your book published. Go online, find a publisher you like and submit your manuscript. Remember, it takes most authors lots of tries submitting their manuscript to different publishers. Let’s say you have a publisher that likes your book and gives you a contract to print your book. Now you go through editing which doesn’t take a lot on your part. Next (if your book requires this) is illustration. Most of the time the publisher has hired illustrators to work on your book. That step is easy unless you choose to hire someone separately or draw them yourself. Now your book starts the printing process. This is your time to start the hardest part in publishing a book…MARKETING. Most people who dive blindly into publishing a book don’t get. Unless you are a famous author YOU the author are expected to do most of the marketing for your book. That means getting a website, contacting book stores, contacting media, and a lot more! This is very hard work. If you a prepared to give up a significant amount of time to promote your book, this is fine. If you expect to sit on your couch and wait for your first paycheck you are sadly mistaken. Put the effort in and it will pay off. I hope I answered your question and If you would like some more specific questions answered about publishing please feel free to contact me through my website www.tomatoturtle.com then click "contact". If I were writing a book and it had poems and writing how many pages should it have? Minimum?

Well I have all these poems and I’m going to put them in a book and write a story around them. I haven’t exactly started but when I do I might post some of it.
So any idea how many pages it should be minimum?
Any other tips?

Also check out my other questions.
I would make this into a book.

One poem should be like one or two pages. I wrote some poems and stuff and they were just one page. When i write stories! Well that’s another story, when i write stories it up to 15 minumum but I can write WAY more that’s just a minimum.

I finished my book but I don’t know how to go about getting it edited/published. Any help?

I finished my 375 page book and I’m not sure how to go about editing and then hopefully publishing it. I know editing consists of me going through the book and fixing things but everytime I bring up my manuscript I come up blank with what to do. I already went through and got a lot of the grammar errors fixed but now I have no clue what else to do. Also, I don’t have a clue on how to begin to get it published. I would love tips from experience. Thanks!

First, congratulations on finishing your manuscript! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to finish a manuscript of that size.

I would echo some of the earlier answers, and recommend you hire an editor to help you go through your story and help make it as strong as possible before sending it to a publisher. You should also get an agent (make sure to get one who does not charge anything up front–most reputable agents make their money from commissions on the sale of your book).

Publishers often send back form letters with rejections, rather than giving you useful information to improve your work (not their fault, they receive far too many submissions to respond individually). Using an editing service can help you find inconsistencies or other areas of improvement for your work, which can result in a much stronger work.

You can also learn more from the editing service on types of things to look for yourself, which helps you to develop stronger stories in the future. This might include assumptions you’re making, but forgot to actually write down in the story, or identifying portions of the story that are misplaced or unnecessary. Being too close to your work can blind you to some of these things, but an editing service can help uncover these hidden problems.

I work for an editing service at http://www.writanon.com/services/editing , and you can feel free to submit a portion of your work there for a free 2000 word sample edit. Once you receive feedback on your work, you can evaluate whether it’s worth continuing to use the service.

Whether or not you choose to use the service, good luck as you continue on with your journey. Good luck!

Edit:

Somehow a comma was included in the URL I gave you earlier. Sorry for the inconvenience: the corrected URL is: http://www.writanon.com/services/editing

Also, for most writers, I would not recommend self-publishing except as a last resort. You usually end up doing all of the marketing yourself, and it’s very difficult to make money using this method.
