Novel Writing, My True Story

Novel Writing, My True Story

By Arthur L Burton III

Novel writing begins with a thought, a vision, something that you see everyday like a sign or a person. In general, you need to have an idea for a Novel before you can begin to say that you are going to write a bestseller. It has been the dreams of writers for years to write a book that everyone will love and praise. I remember on my way Upstate New York I saw a sign that said The Town of Monroe. I was on my way to a party and when I arrived and sat down at the table my mind was running through scenarios so that I could begin writing. I went into the bathroom, removed some tissue and wrote the title down along with some character ideas. This was the birth of my first novel titled The Savior of the Woods. I made one mistake, I took the easy way and self-published the novel without first researching what I would need to do to prepare for a successful novel. I wrote the novel paid the fee and two days later sent in a badly edited copy of m Novel. I began searching Google and people were reading the novel and making statements that it was a great novel but the editing took away from a book that was a great story. I was on my way completing my second novel I began sending out 50 query letters a day and every one of them came back with an excuse why the Agent would not pick me up. I was discouraged but I knew that I did not have the financial stability to self-publish and market another novel. I held on to the novel for almost a year before I became encouraged again and started once again attempting to solicit an Agent. I came across the same problems as the first time. No one was interested in picking up my project to represent me. I refused to give up trying to find a way to publish my novel so I went on yahoo and began searching for independent publishers who were looking for a fiction novel. The first one I came across was Publish America. I read some reviews and people were saying that Publish America was a POD (purchase on demand) Publisher. I called and asked them and they informed me that they were not so I sent in my best query letter and after two day’s they requested to read A Brand New Night for Murder and then published it.

If you know that you have written a great novel then you have to get it published. The thing new writers do not know is that most writing groups do not consider a self-published Author a published Author and they will not accept your submission for membership. Remember in your quest to become an Author do not accept any contract just because you are in a hurry to get your book on the market, because the quick route is usually never the right route. You have to take your time, do it right by your novel and research the company or publisher before you agree to any terms. There have been several complaints about Agents who post on the web their agencies because they are not legit. I would suggest that you join a yahoo group for writers and this way you have access to writers who will be familiar with Agents and Publishers.

Five Keys to Book Writing Success

Writing a book isn’t hard, but you have to make a commitment and put in the work to actually make your dream of becoming an author a reality. If you’ve been searching through web sites and books for a writing strategy that ensures success, then look no further. Use the following five tips to get your book done!

1. Develop an Outline
Think of your outline like your plan. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it should give you a fairly detailed idea of what you want to write and where you want to organize everything in your book. Consider the following questions: How are you going to move the story along? What are your major scenes? What information are you going to convey? What anecdotes will you use to highlight your main points? Put all this information together in one place, and then refer to it every time you sit down to write.

2. Dedicate Time to Writing
If you want to write a book, the most manageable way to do it is write every day. Even if you just get a few paragraphs down every morning before work, you’re making steady progress—and those pages add up. So get up thirty minutes early tomorrow morning and write for as long as you can. Do this every day and your book could be finished in a matter of months.

3. Get Motivated
The rewards for writing every day take time to pay off. You have to show up and do the work, but the most appealing benefits don’t start happening until after the book is published. To keep yourself plugging along, you have to find ways to keep yourself motivated. Try treating yourself to a new book or night at the movies for every fifty pages you finish. Small rewards can keep you going until the big-picture benefits come your way.

4. Be Accountable
When it’s just you keeping track of your work, slacking off is easier. So be accountable for your writing progress to at least one person. You could keep a running page tally with a colleague or spouse—just make sure the person is tough enough to keep you writing.

5. Overcome Challenges
As fun and rewarding as writing a book can be, every author faces challenges. The successful ones know how to overcome the obstacles that occur when writing a book-length manuscript. Be aware of the resources available to you—such as books on writing, writing communities, and classes—that can help you overcome and avoid the challenges that might otherwise stop your progress altogether.

Get Your Book Done
It doesn’t matter where you are in your writing life right now. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, you can write your book. When you use these five strategies, success is definitely within your reach!

What would be a good book to compare/contrast with Alice in Wonderland?

I need to write an essay comparing and contrasting a children’s book with Alice in Wonderland. Any ideas would be very helpful! Thank you!

Coraline no doubt. I always said that Coraline was the twisted version of Alice in Wonderland, yet still appropriate for kids

7 Keys to Writing a Children’s Book that Sells Like Hotcakes

There are seven fundamental reasons that some books succeed and
others collect dust on the author’s bookshelf. These seven keys
to success as an author are simple, obvious even, and yet in the
midst of our writing many of us forget them.

We get so focused on the idea of the book that we forget the
mechanics. Here is the strategy that award winning authors use:

1) Create a hero that your audience can relate to.

Examine your target market honestly. Who will be reading your
book? Just because you think that your main character is funny,
charming and brilliant doesn’t mean that they will or even that
that is what they care about.

2) Write for your audience, not your highschool English
professor. There has already been a Shakespeare. Most genres do
not require you to write like him. You will just turn your
audience off if you write at a level beyond their comprehension.

3) Give your reader a problem that he or she can empathize with.

Ex. Are you writing for teenage girls? Then something to do with
the pains of adolescent romance, or lack thereof, might be a
good start.

4) Provide a nemesis that makes sense. The antagonist in your
story should appear to be everything that your main character is
not. Then go back in and give him or her some good qualities as
well.

People are not good or evil. Your characters should have the
same character traits, as the rest of humanity.

Ex. A Thief with a Conscience or who hates everyone except his
little sister, who he has taken care of since their mom died.

Give all your characters depth.

5) Provide obstacles for your main characters. Both your hero
and antagonist need to have a few bumps in the road. Life isn’t
smooth. Let them both screw up and figure their way out of their
messes.

6) Your hero, at the very least, must learn a lesson about
himself or herself. Is he braver than he thought he was? Is her
nerdiness actually an asset?

Your characters should have some type of self-realization. It
can be subtle. You do not have to go into a five chapter
monologue on it, just give the readers some clues that he or she
has changed.

7) Begin and end your story with a bang. Grab your reader’s
attention in the beginning and have them hoping for a sequel in
the end. The rest, no matter how much work you put into it, will
probably be skimmed until they hit the next seat gripping scene.
Your job is to make that skim time as short as possible

How to write your own book in 3 simple steps – Tips to become an Author

Books have always existed as a medium of transferring information for hundreds of years. Even with the high adaptability of internet, books are still known as the best source to acquire reliable and accurate information. writing a book also gives credibility to the author and positions him or her as an expert in their field. Many people dream of writing their own book, but always procrastinate because it appears to be a daunting task. Here is a 3 step plan that you can start immediately to write your own book.

1. Do the outline

This is the most critical step in the process. Always start out with a highly detailed outline. The more detailed your outline is, the less time it will take you to complete the book. First, write headlines for 10 to 14 chapters in the book. Organize them according to the right order. Then create sub-headlines and sub-sections for each of the chapters. Do not be concerned at this stage about the number of pages or actual content.

2. Get time

After you have a detailed outline prepared, then it you can start writing. However, before that, you must schedule time each day to complete this task. Take out your calendar and block off an hour or two just to write. Then discipline yourself to write some content, whether you feel like it or not. After few days, you will get the momentum going and soon you will start enjoying this process. Without the right plans and schedules, you will get distracted by various temptations that come to you everyday.

3. Don’t re-write

When you are writing content for your book, do not be concerned about grammar, spelling and formatting. Of course they are essential parts of a good book. But if you need your book written within days and not years, focus on getting your content right. If you are using a word processing software, turn off the grammar and spelling indicators. That will help you to keep focus on the actual subject that you are writing on. After you have completed writing all the content, you can go over the content and perfect the formatting.
