How to Write a Novel Outline
A novel outline is an important part of a novel since it states the contents of the book and therefore affects a reader’s attitude towards the novel. Thus, the reader can be attracted or discouraged to read a novel by simply reading its outline. The outline of a novel generally gives a plan of the material that is presented in the main body of the novel.
The outline highlights the order of presentation of ideas as well as how the various subtopics in the novel relate to each other. By reading the outline, the reader gets a gist of what is contained in the main body and hence makes a decision on reading accordingly. It is therefore imperative that writers be well equipped with skills on how to write a novel outline.
Novel writers can arrange an outline in various ways depending on the skills they have gained on how to write a novel outline.
There are many ways to plan the outline so that different sections appear under particular subheadings. In some cases, a chronological presentation may work well, but in some instances, a spatial format may work best. Nevertheless, the best way to go about writing an outline is to start from a general overview and give more details of the novel in sections that come later. Thus, the writer starts with a general concept and then gives specific examples. Another important point on how to write a novel outline is that the outline should contain a thesis statement that summarizes the contents of the whole novel. The statement should be complete and pitchy in order to catch the attention of a reader.
