ANd how do you publish one?
Well…you have to be at least 18 or older to be published. It’s very rare that a teen (13 and up) is taken by an agent these days. (Because of legal reasons.)
Publishing is a very long and drawn out process. And there’s little guarantee these days that any writer–of the 17 million all over the world–will get a contract from an agent; let alone a publisher.
In order to get published, you have to know the ins and the outs of the industry, the writing styles used, and your immediate competition. You will also have to closely study what is being published, what is currently *hot* out in the market and what you need to do in order to stay one step ahead of everyone else.
To be blunt, the only *way* you’re going to get your foot in the door, is if you either have connections within the publishing world, or you have the *right* connection to the right agent, to the right publisher and so forth.
You’re not going to get in flying blind or writing blind.
You also have to realize that publishing is a *business* and if you want in, you’re going to have to write like you have that business in mind and all you want to produce is *money* for the trade. (Commercial writing.)
If you only want to write for yourself, you’re going to find most of the doors and avenues closed to publishing–and the wait time is going to be *long*. (Years, possibly decades.)
Also realize that there are 100+ literary agencies here in the US, with 4000+ publishers in North America overall.
Your chances of being published–through normal routes–is roughly 1 in 1.2 million.
Also understand that just because you’ve written *one* book, it doesn’t mean you’ll get published immediately soon after. Most new writers don’t get the "traditional" treatment and many have to settle for either small press or vanity press publishers. (Which is a bad idea by the way.)
I’ve written more than a dozen novels, and I can tell you that after 12 years of trying, I’m no closer to getting my foot in the door than I was when I first started out.
It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there and in order to be published *and*/or noticed, you have to stand out and you have to give your BEST.
I believe you can be any age. There are two ways I know of to publish a book. I’m sure there are more than two but this is what I know.
Also, you might want to consider hiring a literary agent, somewhat like an actor’s agent. Another option is self publishing–this is the most initial investment but the profits are all yours and you have the most creative rights. The other route is sending your manuscript out to publishing companies, but they will take a large percentage of what you make. What kind of book? Cook book? Children’s book? Murder mystery? Make sure you edit your book and work on it. There are good sources of where to publish in Writer’s magazines and there is a section I believe on book publishing in Barnes and Noble.
Age is just a number!
Joining a writing group or getting to know a published writer would be good networking options as well.
