how do they get published ?
am i the only one who thinks english literature is going to the dogs ?
nowadays it seems any book that has a sparkly vampire in it can get published ?
Books are published based on the publishers belief that they will sell. I’m assuming this whole post was directed towards twilight – and obviously it was very very smart for them to publish this book because it got them millions. It might not be your type of book but it sold incredibly well for the audience it was directed to.
Some people just can’t get interested in thick, well thought out plots and highly creative and in depth characters because either they have a low reading level or just don’t like things like that – and I think it’s absolutely great that there is a series out there that gets these people reading. It’s not like you have to read those books.
In the same way "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie" was written for children, "Twilight" was written for it’s own kind of person and they enjoy it – so why poo on that?
I know, it sucks. I guess for now, it’s the new money-making fad and all the publishers/crappy authors (who need to stay away from a word processor at all costs) are wanting to get in on the act and make some money off of it while they can.
Watch, the next fad will be human-zombie love affairs…..yuck! Idk, they might already be out there!

Well I read a book that was meant to be about living in the ‘hood’ and gun/knife crime ect. It was so awful I didn’t even finish it even though it was no more than 100 pages.
And then I thought, hey if they published this crap maybe I have a chance too! So I looked up the publisher’s website and it turned out that the book I read was meant to be for teens with reading difficulties :s

I think the answer is…those writers have the financial backing, because they have the money to publish it themselves, or that someone with money did like the book (no accounting for taste, I guess). I was appalled that a recent New York Times bestseller had a detailed and horrifying rape, torture, and murder of a child, fully detailed, under the guise of religious acceptance and explanation of why bad things happen to good people. I can only imagine the delight these horrible people who commit these crimes got out of the details, and I was offended that there was no warning. I did not want this crap in my mind.

It is a matter of audience, and the lack of quality in the audience these days is a constant and unpleasant surprise to publishers as well. Many, many aspiring authors are on long waiting lists by publishers to be published, as the quality readers are limited.
In the 1980′s two things happened, the big box book sellers appeared on the screen to replace the loved corner book store. This brought books to people who had not been book buyers before. These folks just love to read the book written by the illliterate actress or apologist musician who can’t tell you enough lies about themselves as they went from birth to age twelve as a gift to the world.
The second thing that happened was a book called, "The bridges of Madison County." It is the worst book ever written and it is undisguised male fantasy combined with ego and insipid stupidity of the lowest common denomentor. A newspaper at the time compared its writing to a cloting catalogue, and the clothing catalogue was better written. Every publisher turned down the book, so the author self-published it originally. Sadly, it became the biggest selling book of the decade. It got picked up eventually by Little Brown on a reprint.
So, the publishers learned and now make bigger profits from the illiterate and the dense and those of little ability to even understand what they are reading. The good books are still out there, they just rarely make a best seller list. Keep looking!

Because the publishers think they will sell. Sadly, they’re right.

Because publishers KNOW there is a market for such books.
They will offer a variety so everyone gets what they like.
Yes, we wince when we see a title like "The Greek Billioniare’s Secret Baby’s Mistress has PMS" –but there are tens of thousands of people buying such titles.
That’s a nice chunk of money in today’s market. They will always go for the money.
Yes, we adore a wonderful feast prepared by Wolfgang Puck.
But sometimes you just get to jonesing for a greasy, bad-for-your heart Big Mac and fries.
Just think of the bad stuff as fast food. Feast when you can, though, and let others pick what they like.

I have to respond here with a quote:
‘The end of the world is nigh, everyone wants to write books, children do not obey there parents anymore …..’
It is from a stone Inscription by an Egyptian priest 2000 years BC, so ca 4000 years ago.
So I think you are simply observing that there is books for the masses and then there is literature.
If you stick to the latter you will have much more fun. I certainly do.
I am on goodreads.com, where I have a shelf of ca 600 books read and 400 books to read and the list is getting longer every week. No Dan Brown or Twilight in it though.

It’s because publishers go for books that have a greater potential to sell, nevermind if the story is predictable.
You see, traditional publishing is still a business. No matter how they say that the beauty of traditional publishing is that they pay to get your book published and not the other way around, they will not invest in your work if they think they cannot get a return on it anyway.

Publishers will publish books that they think will sell. Blame the book buying public for the state of books.
