Today, any crafts person who wants to can publish their own craft book. And the news gets better. Not only are the costs remarkably low but the profit margins are massive. Instead of the 10 per cent that an old-fashioned publisher would pay their craft author you can, with digital publishing, be looking at 80% plus. That’s clear profit, in your bank account.

What’s more, the old stumbling blocks of advertising, marketing and fulfillment have also been torn away. Crafts people all over the globe are not only writing books but handling the entire publishing process themselves. The market is now open to all. The knowledge you have can soon become your own craft book, available worldwide, day or night.

Whether your drive is from a search for personal satisfaction, a deep desire to share your knowledge, or a the wish to build a substantial and sustainable income, becoming a craft book publisher is now an achievable goal, not a pipe dream.

Not so very long ago your course would have been to approach publishers or their agents with your ideas or, more likely, a virtually complete book. Many people think they can write a craft book – and why not? Really there’s not much more to it than explaining what you do – and how you do it – to a friend. Then you just write that down. The money you make from hard copies is obviously less – you do have to pay for that printed version – but it’s you who decides the price and the margins are still greater than via a traditional craft book publisher.

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? There must be a catch?

Well nobody can tell if your craft book will actually appeal to a wide audience, and you’ll want to do some additional work to promote it, but all of this can be done by you, from home. What’s more you can also benefit from the residual income that being a craft book publisher generates. You do the work now but the book goes on selling (and putting money in your bank) for years.

Not so long ago a craft book publisher was an extremely important person if you wanted to get your craft book printed. I suppose that goes without saying. Today things are a bit different though. While they still have a lot of power, self-publishing is now a viable alternative. It’s an alternative that can make you a great deal more money than traditional craft publishing too!

Like any business, there have always been good craft book publishers and there have always been bad ones. On the one hand you have those people who are craft fans and who want to help promote crafters and artists but on the other you have too many publishing houses where it’s the accountants who hold sway. It’s a sad fact that many a good craft book never made it to print because someone who new math, but not the market, decided that the numbers didn’t add up.

Self publishing your craft book can be a minefield as well. The vanity press will quite happily print thousands of copies for you, but then you’re on your own. There are your books at the factory door, all nice and shiny and new, but who is going to distribute them? Who is going to approach the book stores? That will be your job.

Today, taking on the role of craft book publisher is a bit different. I’m sure you can see that your pc is the tool to write and put your book together with, but it’s also a whole publishing, sales and marketing machine too. What’s more, you can approach the customers yourself, cutting out the middle man and selling direct, which of course means you get to keep the lion’s share of the profits.

Think there will be software you can’t handle? You’ll need some nice graphics for a cover but many crafts people are good designers anyway. Even if you need to get someone else to do it for you there are many places you can find freelance book cover artists who will do the work for very little cost. Apart from that, a word processor and a blog and you’ve pretty much got your own craft book publishing empire! Never used a blog before? Don’t worry, that’s exactly the kind of person blogging is aimed at. It’s easy to start and probably the most powerful marketing tool you’ll find.

Publish your craft book digitally, as an ebook, and your costs are tiny. You can be selling your craft book for less than a hundred dollars. Want a hard copy? No problem. Print on demand companies will do them for you and your minimum quantity isn’t a couple of thousand, it’s just one!

Did I mention profit? I know your book might be a labor of love, but getting paid for it is nice too. Be your own craft book publisher and instead of the 10% that you might have got before your margins can be 80% and more!
