I have not read his book… I want to read his book.
Ah, you can read it in Japanese. In fact it was written in Japanese, then translated to English.
Thank you!! I examined his book at once
I am interested in some of his book. I will read. Thanks.
well done!
By the way, orange: he lives just in front of the Kyu Furukawa Gardens (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ionushi/232509668/). I noticed you like going to Tokyo parks…
Ho hooo!! Donald Keene is your friend!!!
hehehe!
I was still in university in Japan when I was first introduced to one of his books ("Emperor of Japan" of course) and then I kept on reading his works. He has also made a lot of translations of famous Japanese writers like Yukio Mishima, that’s amazing! You have to get me his autograph!!!
Wow, Paco! So you went to the University and that all!
How’s Wakayama these days?
Yeah, actually this work at the Prefectural Government is the second time living in Japan. Five years ago I was an exchange student for a year at a university in Kyoto called Doshisha. By the way, did you hear about our ill-fated governor? I saw it all from here!
It was all "very educational"!
Yes, I read about that… Hope you are not involved /:-)
great mood in this portrait…..one enters this thoughtful man’s world in an intimate moment…very well done!

Que gran retrato! Me encanta el momento, pero además es una invitación abierta para conocer de su obra!
Gracias por compartirlo. Saludos!
Hey Aurelio. This is a great portait – of a great man. I’m doubly impressed. Terrific image – something to be proud of.
Glad to know you like it! I had forgotten this photo until last week, when I suddenly found it.
¡Gran retrato!
Y gran persona.
To our regret, the number of those who can use beautiful Japanese seems not to have increased as many as his expectation. But his work will remain forever in a literary history in Japan.
wow!
Thank you for posting this picture in the Imagine Literature Pool.

Great photo of an interesting man.
Scholarly portrait
Please add this to the 20 Comments and Up Pool.
Oh, I’m afraid it was already added.
Wow, great pic. Nice mood and atmosphere. I have heard the name before, but I was not familiar with him. I plan to check into his writings thanks to this pic and all of the comments and background info given in the description.

I love the expression on his face. I think it could be cropped to improve but then who am I to say…
Nice pic, but I think that it’s a little dark and maybe it lacks a little contrast
Score 7/10 from the Rate My Portrait
Lighting and focus is a bit too much on the book which I feel detracts from the facial features of the portrait.
Score : 7/10 from the Rate My Portrait group
Great portraiture of a great person (and great personality), indeed!
Well, his legendary books about history of Japanese Art, culture, literature, theatre etc……….. are among my favorites………….. Really, a must for an expert in the field of Japanese culture!
Many thanks for sharing with us!

This is really interesting… Sometimes I think without my diaries I would have forgotten half of my past and have a wrong memory of the other half…
Great portrait of a great man!

Seen in Literary Reference in Pictures: post one/comment one – one a day (?)
Oh wow. ??????!
I am eternally indebted to Donald Keene for his Anthologies of Japanese literature. The only place that I could find some of the Manyoshu and oh so many other goodies that I have come to love (and some of the main reasons I came here to live).
My Japanese progresses slowly, but I will not stop until I can read the things I love in the language they were written. But in the meantime, I have translations – many from this man.
And I love that he is using a fountain pen! Great picture.
